Overview
The elementary STEM program offers students an introduction to STEM careers, coding, digital literacy and computer science fundamentals along with the opportunity to actively engage in the engineering design process. STEM learning experiences build 21st-century learning skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, creativity, and innovation. These experiences are based upon the mathematical practices and STE practices from the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks and help students build upon their understandings from other content areas.
COMPUTER DRAFTING
- Computer-aided design (CAD) is a computer technology that aids a designer or drafter in the creation of a product, and documentation of the design process. CAD may facilitate the manufacturing process by transferring detailed diagrams of a product’s materials, processes, tolerances and dimensions with specific conventions for the product. It can be used to produce either two-dimensional or three-dimensional diagrams, which can then when rotated to be viewed from any angle and printed using a 3D printer. CAD is also known as computer-aided design and drafting (CADD)
- CADD encompasses all of the fields and industries where CAD is being used to design and create products such as that from the aeronautical industry, architectural industry, civil industry, mechanical engineering, Animation, electronic industry and just about any industry or field which requires detailed design of parts, and structures.
- When the students reach the high school they can choose from several electives in the Technology Engineering Department. Every class includes CAD using either Solid Works or Autodesk products. Students are able to then print using several 3d printers located in the department for the practical application of their designs in their projects.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMING
- The high school offers a wide array of computer programming classes in Grades 9 through 12.
- The high school offers a comprehensive program in Computer Science, which includes BASIC/Visual BASIC, C++ Programming and Robotics and AP Computer Science.
- On a global scale, there will be 1.4 million computer programming jobs available by the year 2020. Offering Engineering and Computer Programming in our district provides our students with greater options when applying to college and seeking employment in the job market. In a world where the current job market is flooded with Computer Programming positions, Triton students will leave their footprint leading the charge in Computer Science and Engineering domain.
ENGINEERING
- Triton Regional School District offers a comprehensive Technology/Engineering curriculum middle and high schools. At the elementary level, technology and engineering is embedded within science instruction. Classroom teachers and technology specialists facilitate the learning and exploration of engineering concepts.
- The middle and high school will continue its efforts offering a wide array of Engineering/Technology classes in grades 7 through 12. Engineering classes include Engineering Technology 1, 2 and 3, web design, 3D design software programs and robotics are a few of the courses that are offered.
MATHEMATICS
- In the fall of 2015, Triton Regional School District adopted and implemented the Math in Focus®: Singapore Math program in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Besides traditional books, the program has numerous online resources for students, parents, and teachers. These resources include access to virtual manipulatives, interactivities, background videos, and access to student textbooks and workbooks. Please use the links and login information below to access these resources.
- Mathematics contributes in direct and fundamental ways to business, finance, health, industry, and defense. Mathematics is an essential ingredient in the foundation of lifelong work in the information age. The mathematics department at the high school offers a variety of courses to challenge each student to discover his or her individual potential. Each student is required to take and pass four years of mathematics to reach his or her maximum level of quantitative literacy, thereby allowing him or her the best opportunities in life. Courses are designed to challenge each student at a level in which he/she can be successful.
- Triton High School offers Advanced Placement (AP) level mathematics courses, which include AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics and AP Microeconomics. Students learn math through the integration of technology using TI-83/84 graphing calculator software in our classrooms and student use of TI-83/84 graphing calculators to further enhance understanding.
- Students in Applied Mathematics participate in a Project Based Learning experience related to designing, building, and testing home built wind generators. Their math lessons are designed around wind energy, and cover topics including measuring techniques, unit conversions, rotational equilibrium, torque, wind pressure, force, volume, mass, density, and electricity.
ROBOTICS
- The Triton High School VEX robotics curriculum is designed to help students master the fundamentals of robotics and the engineering design process while learning to use industry-leading CAD software and the leading classroom robotics solution, VEX Classroom & Competition Robotics Kits.
- This curriculum leverages the “coolness” of robotics, and the excitement of head to head competition to inspire and engage students. Students will develop guidelines for in-house competitions collaboratively design, build and program a mobile robot. The robotics program engages students in engineering design where they work collaboratively and with time constraints analogous to real-world application. During this process they will learn key STEM principles, and robotics concepts. At the culmination of this class, they will compete head-to-head against their peers in the classroom, or on the world stage in the VEX Robotics Competition, the largest and fastest growing international robotics competition for middle and high school students. No prior robotics experience is required;beginners are able to advance sequentially through the units to gradually increase their knowledge and skill level.
- Triton High School robotics team meets weekly to design and build robots for local state competitions. Each year students participate in the VEX robotics tournament hosted by WPI. In 2017, Triton took home four prizes including first place!
SCIENCE
- Science is, by its nature, a creative human endeavor. Scientific and technical innovations are advanced through processes that build on previous knowledge and the application
- of theory to real world situations. Modern societal and environmental challenges require new and creative scientific and technical approaches, as well as investigations that are more cross-disciplinary.
- In 2017, Triton adopted two new programs to address the 2016 MA Science, Technology & Engineering (STE) Standards in grades K-8. Students in K-2 learn engage in science through the use of Inspire by McGraw Hill (Need Access). Students in grades 3-8 work with STEMscopes (Need Access), an entirely online, hands-on curriculum.
- The Science Department offers a variety of courses to stimulate the natural curiosity of students.
TECHNOLOGY
- Technology is the technical means people use to improve their surroundings. It is also a knowledge of using tools and machines to task efficiently. We use technology to control the world in which we live. Technology is people using knowledge, tools and systems to make their lives easier and better.
- The MA Digital Literacy and Technology standards are integrated into classroom instruction at the elementary and middle school level.
- Triton High School offers a variety of courses that teach students how to problem solve using hands on activities utilizing computers, tools, machines and their peers.
