Science of Reading

The Science of Reading is a comprehensive body of research that provides us with information about how we learn to read. It helps us understand the skills involved, how these skills work together, and the parts of the brain that are responsible for reading instruction.

David Kilpatrick stated, “We teach reading in different ways; they [students] learn to read proficiently in only one way.”

"The Science of Reading (SoR) has demystified any wonder of how we learn to read and offers evidence backed by science to confirm that there is one right way to teach reading. In addition to this, the SoR offers key information to drive our approach to instruction and to reach all learners."

Structured Literacy

Structured Literacy is an approach to reading that is based on the Science of Reading. It includes systematic (logical) and explicit (direct teaching) instruction in phonology (sound structure), sound-symbol associations (alphabetic principle), syllables (6 types), morphology (prefixes, suffixes and base words), syntax (grammar, sentence structure, mechanics of language), and semantics (meaning in language). Structured Literacy also includes using continuous assessment to plan and guide instruction.

MTSS

"MTSS is a framework designed to meet the needs of all students by ensuring that schools optimize data-driven decision making, progress monitoring, and evidence-based supports and strategies with increasing intensity to sustain student growth. MTSS is not just about tiered interventions, but rather how all the systems in a school or district fit together to ensure a high quality education for all students."
